Our daily lives are marred with stress-inducing activities. Regardless of whether you are 15 or 50, your daily routine is bound to leave you with tense shoulders and a banging headache.
Fortunately for us, our ancestors figured out ways for us to de-stress ourselves and make life more bearable. Be it complex positions and poses of yoga that leaves our limbs in knots or something simple like circular breathing, the art of meditation and yoga is our savior in this world full of strain.
Benefits of Yoga and Meditation
1. Get rid of back pain
The spine needs plenty of useful bending and twisting because that’s one of the ways it gets the nutrients it needs. Therefore, yoga can help with chronic back pain and is proven to add to the health and flexibility of the backbone.
2. Get rid of rheumatoid arthritis
Yoga can help with arthritis and to some extent prevent the onset of it. The slow and calculated pace of these movements increases flexibility which helps alleviate the pain in our joints. Flexibility gradually increases over time so we can’t just start off with complex poses because that would worsen the condition.
3. Get better heart health
This works because yoga improves the circulation of the blood just as any other exercise does. This makes our arteries more durable and removes plaque from them. This, in turn, helps to regulate blood pressure, further improving the state of the heart.
4. Get rid of bronchial asthma
People who meditate and do yoga practice their breathing and train their lungs to accommodate more air by taking shallower breaths. A technique known as complete breathing has been experimentally proven to increase the lung capacity of those suffering from lung conditions and increase their capacity for physical exertion.
5. Gets rid of digestive problems
A number of gastrointestinal issues like ulcers or irritable bowel syndrome are brought on due to stress. By lowering our levels of stress with meditation, we can significantly improve the state of our digestive systems. Besides this, yoga also helps with issues like constipation by massaging our intestines and regulating ingestion. It also stimulates our lymphatic system which flushes out toxins and further mends our digestive process.
6. Improves posture
With practice, we can learn how to properly balance our heads on our spines, which is the part of our body that was meant for this purpose. This not only improves our appearance but also saves our shoulders and neck muscles the trouble of having to support the head, a task that would cause them much strain and us much discomfort.
1. Get rid of stress
Mindfulness meditation has been proven to reduce stress and tension from the body. This is the best way to relax and calm your nerves without medication that can cause a drop in your productivity.
2. Get rid of anxiety
Yoga and meditation have both been proven to curb the production of the stress hormone cortisol. The release of this hormone causes sleep disorders, anxiety and other such problems. Yoga can help with anxiety disorders and make us more relaxed by limiting the production of this hormone.
3. Get rid of depression
Serotonin is a chemical that our brain releases which has been related to elevation of mood. It has been proven on various occasions that this chemical’s release is improved by physical activity. Meditating also can help one’s gloomy episodes by restricting the release of the neurotransmitters like cytokines that cause depression.
4. Get rid of absentmindedness
Just as weight training improves our muscle strength, focused-attention meditation improves our attention span. Just a few days of regular meditation can lead us to being able to maintain our attention on one specific thing instead of drifting off to faraway lands or issues. This is helpful because we can remember the details of our daily life tasks better as well as do better in tests for school because we get distracted less easily.
5. Get rid of the bitterness of the soul
Certain types of meditation can help us become better people by making us more kindly. For example, Metta, a type of meditation that focuses on self-love, increases in the meditators’ hearts love for themselves and subsequently for those around them. Likewise, there are other such methods which also remove the bitterness from our hearts for others as well as ourselves.
6. Get rid of insomnia
One major advantage of meditation and yoga is that it improves our control over our thoughts. This allows us to more effectively direct our minds away from runaway thoughts that might result in insomnia. The lower level of stress also contributes to a more restful sleep for us. All this paired with the fact that we can now breathe better gives us a night’s sleep that would make babies envious.
Above all, meditation and yoga are constructive activities that can be done anywhere. You don’t need specialized equipment for it or professional guidance. All these qualities make it the best option for those who want to improve their quality of life without much hassle.
